About The Client

The client is a large energy and utility provider managing electricity distribution infrastructure across multiple service regions. Its grid operations teams were responsible for monitoring substations, transformers, feeders, distribution equipment, and other critical network assets. Operational information came from grid management platforms, asset systems, field applications, GIS environments, and monitoring systems. As the network expanded, fragmented information and manual coordination made it harder to maintain a consistent view of grid conditions, incidents, and field activities. The organisation needed a scalable grid operations model to improve operational visibility, strengthen data management, coordinate field response, and support more efficient management of its distribution network.

The Challenge

The utility operated an extensive electricity network containing thousands of interconnected assets across a wide geographic area.

Grid information was generated continuously through monitoring systems, asset platforms, field activities, outage management applications, and other operational sources. However, these systems did not always provide teams with a unified view.

Asset and location information also needed to remain consistent across GIS, asset management, and grid operations platforms. Differences between records could make it harder to identify the correct equipment when operational issues occurred.

Grid incidents created additional pressure. When faults, outages, equipment alerts, or other exceptions occurred, operations teams needed to identify affected assets, understand available information, and coordinate the appropriate response.

Field coordination added another layer of complexity. Inspection findings, repair updates, equipment changes, and restoration information needed to move efficiently between field teams and central operations.

Large volumes of alerts and operational records also made prioritisation difficult. Teams needed a structured way to separate routine information from incidents requiring immediate investigation.

What Did KGS Do

KGS began by assessing the client's grid operations environment, network assets, operational systems, data flows, incident processes, field workflows, and recurring information gaps.

Operational information covering more than 100,000 grid assets was brought into structured management and monitoring workflows.

KGS helped integrate relevant information from 25+ operational sources, including grid monitoring, outage, asset, GIS, maintenance, and field service environments. Asset identifiers, locations, operational status, and related information were standardised to improve consistency between connected systems.

Incident workflows were structured around event type, affected assets, operational priority, status, and required action, helping teams identify and route grid exceptions to the appropriate operational or field resources.

KGS also strengthened workflows connecting central grid operations with field activities. Inspection results, repair status, equipment updates, and restoration information could be reflected more consistently across relevant systems, and dashboards provided clearer visibility into grid assets, incidents, outstanding actions, field activities, and operational performance across service regions.
